History of the Hollow Reed School

The Hollow Reed School has served children ages 2 years-9 months through 12 years old from Jamaica Plain and the greater Boston community for more than 30 years. In its early years, the school functioned as a nursery school, kindergarten and elementary program. We have functioned as an early childhood center since 1995 while continuing to offer an after-school program for older children.

Susan and Whitney Scott founded the school in September 1977 to educate preschool, kindergarten and elementary school children. They were inspired by the educational philosophy of Hazrat Inayat Khan who advocated learning through play, working with the whole child, respect for all religions and cultures and an emphasis on the arts and on nature.

We continue to draw upon the original inspiration of the school as well as many other influences including current teaching philosophy and practice recommended by professional organizations advocating for high quality early childhood programs.

Hollow Reed School Staff

All of our teachers are experienced and dedicated professionals who have made a commitment to early childhood education as their career. All teachers have training in child development and receive ongoing training as part of their employment in the program. We also have teacher's aides and student teachers as the need arises. Teachers are licensed by the state office for childcare services, certified by the Red Cross in first aid and CPR and receive a complete background check during the employment application process.
