Welcome to the Hollow Reed SchoolThe Hollow Reed School is an independent, family oriented school with an enrollment of 50 students. Located on Sumner Hill in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, close to the Arnold Arboretum, the Hollow Reed School has been providing high quality, affordable early childhood and afterschool education programs to families in Jamaica Plain and the greater Boston community for over 30 years. We offer full and part-time programs for preschool and kindergarten children and an afterschool program for elementary school children. Children may enter the school at the age of two years and nine months. Class sizes are small, with an average ratio of one teacher for eight children. Teachers are experienced and committed to the children, and are licensed via the commonwealth of Massachusetts. We emphasize a warm, family atmosphere and welcome parental participation in the life of the school. Curriculum is planned with a view toward fostering the social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth of the child. We place an emphasis on the arts and on learning through play. We also emphasize a multicultural approach. We strive to foster and honor diversity in our curriculum and community. | ![]() |
Our schedule includes a balance of free play and directed activities,
with daily times for art and music with the classroom teachers, as well
as weekly lessons with our art teacher and music teacher. Children have
daily physical activities in our gym room and a playground. We
introduce early reading and writing activities through storytelling,
journal writing, phonics and games. We also focus on early math and
science explorations and provide the children with a sense of respect
for all humanity by teaching them about the different cultures of the
world. | ![]() |
